An absolutely gorgeous and unique chatelaine purse from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in 18k yellow gold, this ornate coin purse features a beautiful frame that holds a hand wrought mesh bag. The frame displays an incredible line of calibrated French cut sapphires on the front, weighing an estimated 1.50ctw, and a lovely etched geometric design on the other. The mesh is created using delicate interlocking round links and gives the appearance of a fantastic chainmail design. Bezel set in the center of the front of the purse is an estimated .50ctw gorgeous translucent deep-blue sapphire. The purse opens from the top with a kiss clasp featuring two smoothly polished sapphire cabochon accents. Altogether, the estimated weight of all the sapphires is approximately 3ctw. On the back of the purse, you'll find a simple gold bail as well as a straight locking pin, which could be removed by our jeweler at your request. The interior of the purse's frame is marked "BREVETÉ" text to a worn stamp of "S.G.D.G", denoting a particular type of early French patent, as well as a serial number which reads "39051". Given the size of the purse, it likely would have been originally attached to a chatelaine (French for "chain"), on a belt worn by women and men for carrying keys, thimble and/or sewing kit, etc. It's a fabulous and special piece from the Victorian period and would make a wonderful addition to any collection!

Measurements: The purse hangs approximately 1 5/8" long and 1 1/4" wide. The purse weighs 16.3 grams.

Condition: The overall condition of the purse is excellent. Besides normal surface wear there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting. The sapphires are secure and intact. The kiss clasp is secure and in good working condition.
