An outstanding piece from the Art Nouveau (ca1900) era! A combination pin and pendant, this fabulous and unusual piece is carved from labradorite into the shape of a large scarab beetle. The beetle's body is rounded and smooth on the surface, with a few carved lines on its back to represent the wings. The labradorite has a marvelous grey green color and incredible iridescent properties. When turned in the light, the labradorite reveals flashes of vivid colors that range in hues of deep violet, blue, green, and pale yellow along the scarab's face and body. Two rubies are set in the top of the piece to represent the scarab's eyes. The scarab is set atop a 10kt gold frame that runs around the edge of the body. The underside is fastened to a pin back, and the side is attached to a gold loop with a jump ring, allowing the piece to be worn as either a pin or a pendant. A very unique and attractive piece, it would look fabulous worn as a pin or hung from a chain, and would make a perfect addition to any collection!
Measurements: The scarab measures 1 3/4" tall, 1" wide, and 5/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the labradorite or to the gold setting.
