This rare mourning pin/pendant from the Early Victorian (ca1850) era is quite an unusual piece! Crafted in vibrant 18kt gold, the decorative pendant serves as an incredible example of the mourning jewelry tradition. A carved banded agate stone rests at the center, surrounded by a border of flowing repousse detail. Four additional banded agate stones are incorporated within the design. Each stone is rich brown and creamy white in color, and has the hand-carved image of beautiful flowers and elongated stems. The detail has been carved into the layers of the stone, producing a striking and highly contrasting effect! The reverse side of the piece reveals a removable glass frame below a secure bar pin. The see-through window exposes a band of hand-woven hair below, the keepsake of a lost loved one. Surrounding the locket is an engraved memorial inscription of the names and dates of death of two individuals. A gold ring is attached on the back of the piece, forming a hidden bail that is perfect for hanging the piece from a favorite chain. A wonderful antique mourning piece, it is rich in history and would be perfect for the serious Victorian collector!

Measurements: The piece measures 1 3/8" long, 1 1/8" wide, and 3/8" thick. The total pennyweight of the piece is 7.5 dwt.

Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. The carved banded agate stones are securely set and free of any apparent surface chips or scratches. The glass window on the back remains intact and free of scratches, preserving the woven hair below. Both the bar pin and ring bail are securely attached.
